What Are the Parts of a Logic Model?

  • Inputs are the resources needed to support the program run (e.g., staff, funding, facilities, materials, technical assistance, partner entities).

  • Outputs are:

    • The specific activities and direct products of the program (e.g., the work you and your partners will do).
    • The people or groups that will participate in or be reached by those activities.
  • Outcomes are what the program aims to accomplish. The timeframe varies, depending on the type of program, but they are generally categorized as:

    • Short-term (within the 1st year of a program)
    • Intermediate (in years 2–5)
    • Long-term (after 5 years)

ERC Worksheet 2 – Logic Model is a simple, easy-to-use template for a logic model. The template flows from left to right, beginning with inputs (resources you have or will need) and ending with outcomes (what you hope to change/expect to achieve).

NOTE: Remember that a logic model is a tool for designing an evaluation, but its content describes the program, not the evaluation.

INPUTS:
The resources or
WHAT YOU HAVE
to carry out the program
(e.g., time, expertise, technology, funding, partners, information)

OUTPUTS:
WHAT YOU DO
(i.e., the specific activities you will undertake like meetings, press releases, training, direct services)

and

WHO WILL PARTICIPATE OR BE REACHED
(i.e., for each activity, the people you are trying to reach)

OUTCOMES:
WHAT HAPPENS OR CHANGES
as a result of what you do
(i.e., what will be different in the short-, intermediate-, and long-terms if you are successful?)

(e.g. 1 yr.)
