Focus Group Guidelines

To conduct focus groups, you will need a written guide—usually consisting of an introduction, an icebreaker activity, a set of questions for discussion, and a closing statement—based on your data collection objectives. A guide for a one-and-a-half- to two-hour focus group generally includes no more than 12 questions and gives the facilitator flexibility in moving the discussion forward.

Focus group guidelines use some of the same principles as an interview protocol:

  • Avoid yes/no questions
  • Arrange the questions in a logical order starting with least sensitive questions
  • Group same-topic questions
  • Include probes to be used if needed to guide the discussion and explore the topic in more depth

Involving the facilitator in developing the guide ensures she or he understands the kind of information you are seeking.
